With the name of macuquina, the type of coin roughly minted by hand and with hammer blows is known, a method widely used from the 16th century to the mid-18th century. There are different opinions about the origin of the word: while some maintain that they come from the Arabic word "machuch" (approved or sanctioned), others affirm that they come from the Quechua expression Makkaikuna —or macay cuna— which would refer to its manufacture with hammer blows.
