| This coin, minted under the reign of Louis XVI, features the portrait and name of Louis XV on the obverse, even though he had died five years earlier in May 1774. This posthumous coinage, minted only in 1779, can be explained by the late production of Louis XVI's effigy dies, and by the lack of small denominations. For these reasons, the use of the late king's dies was granted by letters patent dated August 22, 1779 (Gadoury, 2018, p. 348 and Clairand, 2023, p.1010). |
