HISTORY - SUETONIUS:

In his youth, before becoming an emperor:

“He applied himself from an early age, with close attention to the study of the open-minded sciences, and frequently published copies of his skill - in each of them. But never, with all his struggles, could he attain to any public post in the government … His mother, Antonia, frequently called him "an abortion of a man, that had been only begun, but never finished, by nature." And when she would find a fault with anyone, she said: “He was even a greater fool than my son, Claudius”. (Claudius 9)

Either standing or sitting, but especially when asleep, he had a majestic and graceful appearance - for he was tall, but not slender. His grey looks became him well, and he had a full neck. But his knees were feeble, and failed him in walking, so that his gait was ungraceful … He was shocking in his laughter, and still more so when he was angry, for then he foamed at the mouth, and discharged from his nose. He also stammered in his speech, and had a shakingly motion of the head at all times, but particularly when he was engaged in any business, however trivial.” (Claudius 30)

“He had children by three of his four wives. With Urgulanilla he had a son Drusus, and a daughter Claudia with Paetina Antonia - and with Messalina he had a daughter Octavia, but also a son, whom he first called Germanicus, but afterwards Britannicus. He lost Drusus while quite young in Pompeii. He was suffocated by a pear, which tossed in the air during play, and caught it with a gaping mouth". (Claudius 27)
