BYZANTINE EMPIRE
Constantine X, Dukas, 1059-1067 AD
AE follis
Christ standing facing / Eudocia & Constantine standing facing, labarum between
8.90 g, 26-32 mm, bronze
DOC III/2 8; SB 1853; overstruck on an anonymous follis, DOC class D or E,  SB 1836 or 1855
These coins are very commonly overstruck on the anonymous folles: On the reverse of this coin the Constantine X type is fairly clear though the nimbus of Christ from the understruck type can be seen in the background. On the obverse, however, all that is clear from the Constantine X coin is the nimbus of Christ and part of the inscription, especially along the edge around 7-9 o'clock.  Clearer is the undertype of the anonymous follis with its three line inscription IS(IX)  (B)ASIL(E)  (BA)SIL where the letters not in parentheses are at least partially visible.  But there seems to be something more, especially noticeable where Christ's face is partially obscured; yet another under/overtype?
