Roman Empire, Eastern Provinces, 4th - 5th Century AD
Lot of three bronze 'propeller' or belt stiffeners. Measures 38mm average, scallop shell and triangular form, nice green patinas
For reference, see:
Bishop & Coulston, Roman Military Equipment, figures 137 and 141.

This type of belt fitting originated perhaps in the Second Century originally as a womans belt, but became popular with the Eastern legions. Such stiffeners are seen on the Arch of Constantine and were apparently used primarily on sword belts.
