TITUS, as Caesar, AE as. Judaea Capta issue, struck at Lugdunum mint, 77-78 AD. T CAES IMP AVG F TR P COS VI CENSOR, laureate head right, globe at point of bust. Reverse - IVDAEA CAPTA, Jewess, in attitude of mourning, seated right on shields under palm tree; helmets, cuirass, and shields behind. RIC II 784 (Vespasian); BMCRE 862 (Vespasian); Cohen 118, RCV 2475, valued at $720 in VF. Rare. 27mm, 9.7g.

A very nice portrait. The reverse is somewhat encrusted and is likely improvable with some skilled cleaning.

A rare and important issue, one of the very few issues of Titus bearing the legend 'IVDAEA CAPTA'. Perhaps more historically important than the same issue under Vespasian, since of course Titus was commanding the front in Judea and his troops sacked the Temple.
