JULIUS CAESAR AR silver portrait denarius. Lifetime issue, struck Jan-Feb 44 BC. CAESAR DICT PERPETVO, Laureate head of Caesar right. Reverse - SEPVLLIVS MACER, Venus standing right holding Victory and scepter. RSC 41, RCV 1414. 19mm, 3.4g.

A lovely example. An imprint on the reverse appears to be from a clashed die rather than an overstrike.

These portrait issue coins were the first to bear the image of a living Roman politician, (this was a strict violation of Roman tradition), along with assumption of 'Dictator for Life', (also shown on this coin) these, along with Caesar's autocratic hubris, were among the major reasons Caesar was assassinated by the Liberators on March 15th, 44 BC. (Brutus, Cassius, et al.).
