Tarpeia, a Roman maiden, betrayed the Romans to the invading Sabines and was crushed to death with shields for her treachery. The Tarpeian Rock, which was used to ritually throw traitors against the state to their deaths on the rocks below, is named after Tarpeia, and this was considered the most disgraceful way to die as a Roman citizen, perhaps short of being executed, stuffed, and then and put on display by the Persians.
