AUGUSTUS AR silver denarius. Rome, 19-18 BC. TARPEIA being buried by shields

zoom view
AUGUSTUS AR silver denarius. Rome, 19 BC. CAESAR AVGVSTVS, bare head right. Reverse - TVRPILIANVS III VIR, Tarpeia facing, buried to waist in shields. RSC 494, BMC 29, RCV 1639. 18.5mm, 3.0g.

Tarpeia, a Roman maiden, betrayed the Romans to the invading Sabines and was crushed to death with shields for her treachery. The Tarpeian Rock, which was used to ritually throw traitors against the state to their deaths on the rocks below, is named after Tarpeia, and this was considered the most disgraceful way to die as a Roman citizen, perhaps short of being executed, stuffed, and then and put on display by the Persians.
