SASANIAN EMPIRE

Ruler's name & His Reign: Ardashir I (AD 224-24T) (Artashir I)
Mint: unknown
Metal & Denomination: billon tetradrachm
Size:
27 mm.
Weight:
12.99 gr.
Obverse: Bust with a long beard wearing Parthian-style headdress with ear flaps facing right Pahlavi legend.
Reverse:
Fire altar without attendants. Pahlavi legend.
Reference: Sellwood #5, (typeII)/ GOBL: SC II/5/2 (plate 1/7)
Notes: This coin is listed in Introduction to Sasanian Coins by David Sellwood as #5. With his style of his tiara and the quality of the metal all remind us of the coins of the last Parthian kings. I think it must belong to the earlier years of his reign.
