This type can only be differentiated from Hadrian's identical issues by date. However, the city date is based on the first year of Ascalon's independence from Seleukid rule, which is generally accepted to be 104 B.C. but is not known for certain. As a result, coins of this date are occasionally interpreted as a very early issue of Hadrian, theoretically only differentiated by portrait style. For our example, we defer to SNG ANS, who places the 'KC' date firmly in Trajan's rule.
