AE Follis 6.20g. 30mm. after AH555 Mayyafariqin mint

Counterstamp 'Lillah' on Byzantine anonymous follis host.

Byzantine host.

C/M: Lowick MH 16; Album 1958; Host: SB Anonymous Class K 1901 on Class J 1900 on ?

Brown patina with some rusty areas. Counterstamp about VF, host Fine.

Mild porosity and rough rusty adhesions. Flan splits.

Though there is no confirming documentation accompanying the coin, its patina suggests it may be from the Mardin Hoard.

Though this counterstamp is anonymous, Lowick attributes it to an Artuqid ruler, likely Najm al-Din Alpi. This example is struck on an anonymous Byzantine follis attributed to the reign of Alexius I, 1081-1118 A.D., itself overstruck on an earlier anonymous follis of Alexius, and again on an earlier unknown type. This coin has been overstruck so many times that it has become quite thin and split.
