AE Half Tetarteron 0.50g. 13mm. Uncertain mint (Thessalonica?)

Bust facing, wearing loros and crown, holding jeweled sceptre and globus cruciger.

Patriarchal cross on two steps, D-A / K-F across fields.

cf. SB 1932 (tetarteron)

Very rare. Green patina.

Some minor roughess.

This unusual issue resembles Alexius' standard tetarteron issued at Thessalonica, but is less than half the weight and of smaller diameter. Sear does not list a half tetarteron of this type, but clearly a denomination of a lower weight standard exists. The crowded and off-center design indicates it was likely struck with full-sized tetarteron dies. Most of the examples we could find share this coin's style, fabric, light weight, and oddly shaped, clipped flan. Rare and interesting.
