Crosby: The Early Coins of America and the Laws Governing Their Issue, with Maris Plate
Sylvester Crosby: The Early Coins of America and the Laws Governing Their Issue comprising also descriptions of the Washington pieces, the Anglo-American tokens, many pieces of unknown origin of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the first patterns of the United States mint. ..., 1875, 381 pages, 10 Heliotype plates, 2 folding manuscript plates, 110 wood engravings in the text, Maris Woodburytype plate of mostly New Jersey coppers, recent half Morocco, marbled sides with matching marbled endpapers, contents fresh and clean. A recent binding by the Harcourt Bindery emulating a typical contemporary look. Perhaps the most significant work on American numismatics published in this country. Crosby indicated that 350 copies were printed but despite considerable advertising and the publishing of extracts in the American Journal of Numismatics, less than one half were spoken for at the time of publication. After a decade of probably slow sales, the balance was sold to Lyman Low. Today, probably 100 examples of this “keystone” of American numismatic literature (quote Eric Newman) remain. Quite scarce with the Maris plate added.
