We found this for sale some time ago and decided we must purchase it. It’s one of few examples of confronted busts on a provincial coin that we have seen for sale. The detail and style in the busts of Gordian and his queen Tranquillina are really nice. Note that NGC agreed, grading the coin AU. Unfortunately with dark coins, in NGC housings, the photographs just don’t reflect the reality of the coin, it looks much better in hand…even through in hand means admiring through the NGC case. On the obverse, behind Tranquillina, there is a little wearing down of some of the letters, however that is almost universal for these coins due largely to the fact that the Thracians tried to ‘cram’ far too many letters in to an insufficient circumference, and therefore, allowed themselves almost no space between the tops of the letters and the edges of the coin. The situation on the reverse is much better suffering only from some flattening of the letters behind Fortuna. She is tall, slim, beautiful, and admirably compliments the coin’s stately reverse. Helping accent her figure are a number of copper colored areas that highlight and outline Fortuna, all on a dark patina background.

It is amazing to see how many versions of this coin are out there. We were immediately attracted because it is an AE27, which is a fairy minor player in a sea of similar coins down to 20mm and perhaps below. Also, Fortuna-Tyche are not as commonly seen on reverses of similar coins, but there are a half dozen gods that are. It’s not hard to form an impression that these gods seem to be associated with poorly skilled engravers, who create few legend letters, and leave odds and ends of single letters that appear here and there in various coin fields. The worst aspect of many of these competing coins is their unintentionally comical renditions of Gordian and Tranquillina.

Perhaps the thing we love best about this coin, other than it’s overall quality are actually two things. The engraver was brave enough to give Tranquillina a nose that any Italian would be proud of and certainly, the magnificent and detailed rendering of Fortuna.
