HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Senons (region of Sens): (Second - first century BC)

The Sénons, whose name means wise or old, controlled a vast area stretching from the south of Champagne and northern Burgundy. Their main operation centers were Agedincum (Sens), which still retained it’s ancient name of Civitas. They had several other operational headquarters, including in Auxerre, Avallon and Thunder. The area where the Sénons lived and recuperated was Divona and their expeditions appear to have set out from there. Romans were fairly close neighbors at Agedincum, where Caesar had wintered six of his legions in 53 B.C. As is typical of Roman encroachment on provincial lands, Caesar left a strong force, under the command of Labienus, lieutenant and legate of Caesar. They settled in for the long run in the region between Sens and Alesia Gergovie. From there, they were able to control the roads and protect Caesar's armies, and they were tasked with initiating attacks on Belgians and Germans, should they stray in to Roman controlled territory. Within 150 years, The Senones disappeared and have never been encountered since. We can probably expect DNA specialists to find where they went and who they came to be. In the meantime, it’s a delight to have a coin from a lost civilization.
