zoom view

Zhou Dynasty ca. 300 BC.   State of Chi.

Denomination : Bronze 3 character knife.

Mint : Chi

Reference : Schjoth-49.

Size : 165 mm x 30.4 mm (at it's widest point)  Weight : 52.03 gram.

Grade : VF for wear but the obverse 3 characters are weakly cast, and obsured by a slighty heavy patination (this knife has never been cleaned, and has an attractive mixed blue and green patination with some encrusting brown dirt).   With the coin in hand, all three characters can be seen but only if looking very closely.  They would probably be much clearer if the coin were cleaned, but the patination is so nice I would hate to clean it.

The dating of these heavy knifes is not well fixed.  Most reference books list them as having be cast early in the Zhou period, but I personally suspect they are much later, possibly as late as about 200 BC during the late Chin or early Han dynasties.
