zoom view

Denomination : AE Quadrans.  Mint : Uncertain Balkan mint.

Date : issued AD 99-102

Reference : Sear-3251

Size : 17.5 x 18.3 mm.  Weight : 2.62 grams.

Grade : gF and nice for the type.  The edge was filed in one area, probably by some one that was not certain what the coin was and wanted to find out if it was bronze or gold (it is about the size of a gold aureus).

Obverse : Head of Trajan right, with IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM around.

Reverse : Female standing left holding a branch, with DARDANICI around.

This exact use for these coins is not certain, but it is assumed they were made for use in the mines.

Sear's prices for this issue ($80.00 in Fine and $200 in VF) are not realistic with respect to recent auction prices.  Note the following example, only slightly better than this one, which realized 280 euros + the buyers premium :

This example, which is much nicer made $480 euros + the buyers premium :

This example, which made 250 German Marks + the buyers premium, has a similar grade obverse, but a much inferior reverse :
