Description : Double holed terret ring with a decorative apex.

Size : 93.5 mm long x 55.3 mm wide across the rings.

Material : bronze with a mid-green patination with brown highlights.

Age : 2nd to 4th century BC.

Condition : Good.

The lower (rectangular) post with the open center would have been inserted into a hole cut into the rail at the front of the chariot, and secured with a pin placed through the rectangular hole.  The reigns would have passed through the two round holes.

Terret rings allowed the driver to handle both reins with only one hand, and would have made the reins easier to recover if dropped.

When we bought this terret ring, it was reported to us that it came from the region of Bulgaria.
