zoom view

Taras is in Calabria in southern Italy, and is also known as Tarentum.

Denomination : Silver didrachm (sometimes called a Nomos).

Date : 420 to 380 BC.

Size : 19.9 x 22.1 mm, Weight :  7.51 grams.

Reference : Sear-334 variety.

Grade : VF but slightly off-centre. Nice old toning.

Obverse : Naked horseman, holding a shield, dismounting from a horse running left.

Reverse : Taras seated left on a dolphin, with a small R below the dolphin's belly, and TARAS below.

For reasons I do not understand, it has become fashionable to call this coin denomination of nomos.   The Greek word "nomos" appears to simply mean "acceptable currency" and is more an accounting term than the name of a specific coin type.
