zoom view

Denomination : 17 mm Bronze.   Mint : Syracuse.

Date : 274 to 216 BC.

Size : 16.0 x 16.9 mm.  Weight : 4.16 grams.

Reference : SNG ANS 1021 variety.  This is probably a rather rare type, with only one specimen recorded in coin archives (CNG Sept. 22, Mail bid sale 67, lot 379), and the type is missing from many references on this series.

Grade : VF with a mid-green patina, but the inscription along the bottom is only visible by traces.

Obverse : Laureate head of Apollo left.

Reverse : Horse prancing right, with traces of an inscription below.  The inscription would have read IERWNOS and while you cannot see any of it on the image, the right side of W next to the left side of the N are faintly visible on the coin.
