Hidrieus was the second son of Hekatomnos, and brother of Maussollos.

Denomination : Silver didrachm.  Mint : Halikarnassos.

Date : ca. 351 to 344 BC.

Size : 17.7 x 18.6 mm.  Weight : 6.92 grams.

Reference : Sear-4959.  SNG Kayhan-881.  SNG Keckman-277.  SNG Van Aul-2366.

Grade : VF, well centred and well struck, with the only significant flaw a small mark at about 1 o'clock on the edge of the reverse.

Obverse : Three quarter facing bust of the Rhodian Helios.

Reverse : Zeus Labraundos standing right, hlding a labrys (double axe) and spear, with IDRIEWS to the left.

The didrachm of Hidrieus are rare, and should not be confused with the much for common didrachms of Pixadoros which look nearly the same except for the inscription.  There are only two Hidrieus didrachms in Coin archives, both of which had major problems.  One (Lanz aution 133 lot 24) had a huge planchet flaw on Apollo's portrait, and the other (CNG Triton X, lot 348) was triple struck on the reverse and based on the image may have been somewhat rough.

The specimen I am offering here appears to be the nicest over all didrachm of Hidrieus available in some years.  The tetradrachms are more common, but command prices over $3000 in this quality.
