zoom view

These kopeks of Ivan IV as Tsar are somewhat scarcer than his denga's as Grand Prince.

Denomination : Silver Kopek.  Mint : Pskov.

Date : These are not dated.

Size : 11.1 x 13.2 mm.  Weight : 0.71 grams.  This is a fairly small coin.

Grade : VF with a decent strike and fairly complete inscription, although slightly weak at the centers.

Obverse : Ivan riding right. thrusting a spear, with cyrillic letters below naming the mint.

Reverse : Cyrillic inscription naming Ivan as Tsar of Russia.

These small coins are commonly known as wire money as they were struck on flans cut from lengths of wire.  All have shear marks at the ends, resulting from how the wire was cut.  The flans are generally smaller than the dies, so only very rarely will very well centered specimens with everything on the flan be encountered (never for some issues).
