This example is of rather low weight, and appears to be struck in fairly base silver, so I think there is little possibility it was struck at an official mint, and is much more likely to be an ancient counterfeit.

Denomination : Silver siglos.   Date : by Carradice to between 485 and 420 BC.

Reference : Sear Greek - 4682.  Carradice IIIb.

Size : 14.8 X 15.2 mm.  Weight : 4.55 grams.

Grade : VF with a fairly good strike, but harshly cleaned with many fine cleaning lines under higher magnification.   The coin has an original hoard patina.

Obverse : Persian king running right holding a bow in front and a spear over his shoulder.

Reverse : Incuse rectangular punch.

It is my personal opinion that the dating sequence of these coins by Carradice is flawed, but at this point it is the best dating system available so I am listing the coins according to his system.

Provenance : ex Darcy Phalen collection.
