Sergius Silus. ca. 116/115 BC

Denomination : Silver denarius.

Reference : Sear-163. RSC-Sergia-1

Size : 18.3 x 19.1 mm. Weight : 3.79 grams.

Grade
: F

Obverse : Helmeted head of Roma right with the denomination mark XVI (in ligate form looking much like a star) behind,  with EX S C ROMA around.

Reverse : Helmeted horseman riding left, holding the severed head of a Gallic warrior, while raising his sword, with a Q below the horses front legs, and M SERGI SILVS in two lines below.

This is a slightly unusual types because the Q below the horses legs means that M. Sergi Silvus was a Quaestor, which is an office that only occasionally undertook the striking of coins.  The obverse inscription includes S C for Senatus Consulto, meaning the coin was struck on special authority of the Senate.
