Denomination : AE 17.

Mint
: Petra in Syia, also known as Decapolis.

Date : struck under Elagabalus between AD 218 and 222, most likely in AD 221 to 222.

Size : 16.9 x 18.0 mm.  Weight : 6.07 grams.

Reference : Spikerman 56 variety (no drapery), Rosenberg 36 variety.

Grade : gVF or better, with sandy highlights over a dark brown patina.

Obverse : Head of Elagabalus, but only about half of the inscription is on the flan and is diffcult to read.

Reverse : City-founding scene with a yoke of oxen being driven right, plowing, with PETRAI above, and a few uncertain letters below.

Many specimens of this type are over struck on earlier coins, and have dramatic mixing of the over and under types, making the two difficult to sort out.  This coin appears to have been struck on a fresh flan.
