Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.  Mint : Pella

Date : Price dates this type to between 325 and 315 BC, which means the type was first struck during Alexanders lifetime, although it does continue after his death. The style is typical of that usually associated with his lifetime issues.

Reference : Price-237 (same dies).

Size : 25.8 x 27.2 mm.  Weight : 17.25 grams.

Grade : VF with an attractive tone, but a dark spot on Herakles cheek.  Very well centered.

Obverse : Head of Herakles right, wearing the lion's skin.

Reverse : Zeus seated left, holding a sceptre and eagle, with ALEXANDOU to the right, thunderbolt below his arm, and an AE monogram above his arm by the eagles head.

This is a very unusual type as one does not normally see a monogram above the arm as one see's on this coin.  This is also a fairly rare type, with no examples recorded in coin archives at the time I am posting this.    It also interesting that the celator mis-spelled Alexanders name, leaving out the R, which Price did not notice on his listing of one from the same dies.

Provenance : ex Darcy Phalen collection.
