zoom view
Size : 100.2 mm long  x  73.1 mm wide x 30.0 mm thick (excluding the post handle).

Material : Light tan color clay.

Age : 5th to 7th century AD and could be either late Roman or Byzantine.

Condition : Poor, with heavy flaking of the surface, and some separation of the join where the top and bottom were joined, and several small cracks in the body (it does not seem to be in danger of breaking, but must be handled carefully).

Reference : A very similar lamp is listed and illustrated in QEDEM, MONOGRAPHS OF THE INSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY, THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERSULAEM #8, lamp #515, although the exact shape is more closely related to lamp #511.

This type of lamp was made in Syria for a long time, but the earliest examples normally have a smaller filler hold, and later examples (as with this one) a much larger filler hole.
