Julia Maesa, grandmother of Elagabalus, AD 218 to 222.

Denomination : Silver denarius. Mint : Rome.

Date : issued AD 218 to 220

Reference : Sear-7754

Size : 18.0 x 19.3 mm.  Weight : 3.16 grams.

Grade : gVF

Obverse : Head of Julia Maesa right, with IVLIA MAESA AVG around.  The portrait has a very youthful look.

Reverse : Pietas standing left, raising her hand over altar, with PIETAS AVG around.  Sear describes Pietas as holding an incense box, but on this coin Pietas seems to have an open hand with her fingers slightly spread.

The very youthful features look more like those of Julia Domna than Julia Maesa, as is not unusual on her early issues from Rome Mint.  Julia Maesa was in the east with Elagabalus when it came time for the first coins to be struck, and it is possible the celators at Rome did not know what she looked like, so simply adapted a Julia Domna portrait and put Maesa's name on it.
