zoom view

Pontius Pilate was the Roman Procurator of Tiberius who presided over the trial of Christ.

Denomination : AE 16 probably a Prutah

Date : AD 31 to 32, (LIH = year 18 of Tiberius)

Reference : Sear Greek Imperial - 5624.

Size : 15.3 x 16.5 mm.  Weight : 1.78 grams.

Grade : aVF.  The date mark is oddly drawn.  Mid green slight crust over a brown patina.

Obverse : Lituus (astrologers staff) with TIBERIOU KAICAROC around but only the first half and a little of the end o the inscription are on the flan.

Reverse : The date mark LIH in a wreath.  This date mark stands for year-18 of Tiberius, which is AD 31 to 32.  The IH are poorly engraved and it took me a while to be 100% certain that was the date, but I am now certain it is.
