Richard I as Duke of Normandy, known as Richard the Fearless, lived about 200 years before the Richard I known as Richard the Lion Heart.  He was the grandson of the Viking chieftain Rollo, and son of William I Longsword.  His second wife, Gunnor, bore him the son and daughter, Richard II le Bon and Emma of Normandy.  Emma married two successive kings of England, Aethelred II and Cnut, making Richard grandfather to the English kings Harthacnut and Edward the Confessor. Through his son Richard II, he was great-grandfather of William 'the Conqueror.

Obverse : Short cross with a pellet in each quadrant, with RICARDVSI around.
