Ancient Coins - Eastern Celtic, silver drachm imitating Alexander III. ca. 3 rd century BC.
zoom view

This type is imitative of the drachms of the Macedonian King Alexander III, with much of his name clearly legible.  This is slightly unusual because most Celtic imitation drachms in this series imitate Philip III's coinage.  I have not yet pinned down where in the Eastern Celtic region these were made but it was probably somewhere in the Danubian area and early in the series as the weight is close to that of the official coins and the style is still pretty good.

Date : ca. 3rd BC.

Denomination : Silver drachm.

Reference : Price B. 19.

Size : 17.0 x 18.3 mm.  Weight : 4.02 grams.

Grade : XF lightly toned, nice for one of these.

Obverse : Head of Herakles with considerable detail for this series.

Reverse : Zeus seated holding his eagle, with a Greek monogram in a circle below his arm, and a barbarous verions of Alexander's name to the right.
