Denomination : Bronze 1/2 jin square foot spade.

Date : These are dated to the later Zhou Dynasty, ca 350 to 250 BC.

Mint : These were probably made at An Yang in the State of Yan.

Reference : Hartill 3.186 c variety.  FD-167.

Size : 49.0 x 29.5 mm.  Weight : 6.00 grams.

Grade : VF for wear, but problems in the casting where the reverse had a slipped mold and the lines do not line up with the form if the coin, also casing the reverse character to be incomplete.  The top of the mold also did not fully fill with bronze, resulting in a ragged edge (the coin was made with this ragged top).    Resonably nice green-blue patina. Most specimens of this type I have seen have been poorly cast or cast with rough surfaces, so it appears to have been a problem with this issue in general.

Obverse : There are two possible readings for this type.  The first is "Yang An" and the second is "Tao Yang".

Reverse : Only part of the reverse characters is visible on the right, due to the slipped mold when the coin was cast.
