Hsien-Feng ruled during the time of the Tai Ping rebellion, and the large denomination inflationary coins and paper money he issued resulted from that war. 

Both sides of this coin have been enameled with alternating quadrants of red and dark blue.  Many years ago we bought a small group of these all enameled like this, and were told they came from an old house in the China town of Victoria BC (Canada), where they had been used as gambling chips.  While we have no way of confirming the story, we have no reason to doubt it.

Emperor : Wen Tsung using the title Hsien-Feng.

Date : 1851 to 1861.

Denomination : Bronze 5 cash.  Mint : Board of Works mint.

Reference : Hartill 22.433

Size : 25.0 mm.  Weight : 4.03 grams.

Grade : Fine but enameled with red and dark blue enamel.

Obverse : "Hsien-Feng Chung-pao".

Reverse : "Dang wu boo yuwan" (value 5, board of works mint).
