zoom view

Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.  Mint : Byzantion

Date : I have seen similar style examples dated anywhere from 250 to 90 BC, but I believe the simply attributing this style to the 2nd century BC is safest.

Reference : Sear-1589 variety.

Size : 30.2 x 33.5 mm. Weight : 16.24 grams.

Grade : gVF with green encrustation that I have chosen not to remove, but could easily be removed (they are not breaks suggesting a fouree core).

Obverse : Head of Alexander right, wearing a Rams horn.

Reverse : Athena seated left holding a small figure of Nike, with a transverse spear on her shoulder, with BASILEWS LUSIMACOU (King Lysimachos) to the sides.  There is a small Greek letter monogram next to Athena's knee, and a a BY indicating the city of Byzantion inside the throne. With a fancy trident below.
