John II, AD 1280 to 1297.

Denomination : Silver Asper, but probably a contemporary counterfeit.

Size : 22.5 x 23.4  mm.  Weight : 1.73 grams.

Reference : Sear-2609.

Grade :  VF with the typical weak areas.

Obverse : Saint Eugenius standing forward holding a long cross, with a Greek inscription naming him at the sides.

Reverse : John standing forward holding a labarum-headed sceptre, and globus cruciger, with a Greek inscription naming him at the sides.

The weight of this coin is about a full gram below the standard for the issue, and the style is slightly crude for this issue, which is pretty clear evidence that this coin, while from the time, was not struck at the official mint, but rather was the work of a medieval counterfeiter.
