zoom view

This coin is a relatively close copy of a genaric Venitian silver Grosso, except that there is no Venitian doge matching the name on this coin.  These tend to come from Bakan hoards and so were probably made in that region some time in the late 13th to mid 14 century, but exactly who made them (local groups, or possibly crusaders who invaded the region) is not known.

Denomination : Silver Grosso.

Date : Late 13th or mid 14th century.

Size : 19.8 x 20.5 mm. Weight : 1.75 grams.

Reference : I cannot find a reference for this exact type.

Grade : VF

Obverse : The doge standing beside St. Mark who is handing him a flag on a long pole, with R VARAMOIO S M VENETI around, and DVX between them.
