Ancient Coins - Athens, ca. 449-413 BC. Silver tetradrachm.
zoom view

Denomination : Silver tetradrachm.

Date : The traditionally accepted dating of this style is 449 to 413 BC, but I believe they were probably minted down to at least 407 BC, which is the most likely date for the emergency issue plated coins of this style.

Size : 23.5 x 24.7 mm Weight : 16.61 grams.

Reference : Sear-2526.

Grade : VF with two test cuts, and graffiti.  Neither test cut affects the owl, and only one of them affects the portrait at the back of the helmet.  The graffiti is interesting, because there is a Aramaic letter E upside down on the cheek, and there is a large punch in mark that may be an Aramaic F or P on the mouth, that gives Athena a rather comical smile.

Obverse : Head of Athena right.

Reverse : Owl standing right, with an olive sprig and crescent moon over its shoulder, with a AQE to the right.
