zoom view

Ruler : Struck in the name of Ziad ibn Abi Sufyan, as Governor from Basra.

Denomination : Silver Dirhem.  Mint : Basra

Date : AH 50 = AD 670

Reference : Mitchiner Islamic - 26 to 27 variety.

Size : 27.0 x 28.5 mm.  Weight : 2.51 grams.

Grade : Fine, but this coin is both smaller and lighter than is normal for this series and have been fairly heavily clipped around the edges (see my comments on this at the bottom).

Obverse : Sassanid style King based on the coins of the Sassanian King Khusru II, with the governors name in Sassanid style script to the sides.

Reverse : Sassanid style fire altar, with the mint name to the right, and the date to the left

This coin is worn to a grade of Fine, suggesting it stayed in circulation for many years. At 2.51 grams, the weight is similar to the 2.6 gram early issues of the reformed Umayyad coinage of about AH 80. It is possible it was clipped at that time, possibly officially, to bring it's weight down to that standard so that it could continue to circulate.
