Ancient Coins - Antoninus Pius, AD 139 to 161, Roman Egypt, Alexandrian bronze drachm.
zoom view

Denomination : AE drachm.  Mint : Alexandria in Egypt.

Date : The date marks are not clearly visible on this coin, although there are traces that I suspect might be part of L I to the right of Elpis and another mark to the left, suggesting a date between year 11 and 19.  Emmett only lists Elpis standind reverses for years 11, 15 and 16 for this type but bust left does not occure in year-11.  So this has to be either year 15 or 16.

Reference : Emmett-1501.

Size : 33.8 x 34.0 grams.  Weight : 21.44 grams.

Grade : Fine but with weakly struck edges for incomplete inscriptions.

Obverse : Head of Antoninus Pius left.  What is visible on the inscription is to the right of the portrait with with EVC AVTK around (AVT is the beginning and EVC is the ending, of the inscriptions.  The break between the C and A is right at 3 o'clock, which should also help determine the exact year of issue.

Reverse : Elpis standing left, holding a flower.  To the left are traces of what is probably L I ( and to the right is a ghosting of another letter, but no enough to identify it.
