Anonymous, ca. 211 to 206 BC

Denomination : Bronze Sextans  Mint : Catana in Sicily ?

Date : 211 to 206 BC.

Reference : Sear 1211

Size : 19.7 x 20.2 mm. Weight : 5.72 grams.

Grade : F/VF but cleaned and slightly rough.

Obverse : Head of Mercury right, wearing the winged petausus, with two pellets above.

Reverse : Prow of a Galley, with a corn ear above, KA monogram to the right, and ROMA below.

This type lacks the two pellets as a denomination mark on the reverse that most other types have.  David Sear comments that the type is probably minted in Sicily and that the KA monogram may be a mint mark for the city of Catana.
