A unique, unrecorded Anglo Saxon silver penny minted under King Eadred. Struck circa 946 - 955 AD under a moneyer of the same name, Eadred.

The obverse with circle around cross pattée with the legend around reading:

+ EADRED REX

"King Eadred"

The reverse with a row of three cross pattées, a trefoil of pellets above and below the legend in two lines either side reading:

EADRED MO

"Money of Eadred"

The son of Edward the Elder, Eadred was proclaimed King after his elder brother Edmund I was murdered in 946. Eadred soon set about the main challenge of his reign, repelling Viking invaders from northern England. He finally succeeded in 954 when his army defeated and killed the fearsome Viking leader, Eric Bloodaxe.

However, Eadred died just a year later, leaving a vast fortune behind, much in the form of silver pennies such as this. The majority of this great treasure perished but this unique silver penny survives - the only known example struck for Eadred by this moneyer.

Diameter: 21.5 mm.

Weight: 1.25 g.
