A beautiful Classical Greek silver coin. A didrachm from Tarentum, South Italy, circa 425 - 415 BC.

The reverse with the mythological founder of Tarentum, nude and riding a dolphin, his right hand raised, his left clutching a struggling octopus; a scallop shell below.

The reverse with the eponymous Taras, seated on a low stool, his lower half swathed in thin drapery cascading in folds down his legs. The youthful hero balances a spindle on the back of his right hand, a perfume flask dangling from a string around his wrist, his fingers splayed outwards like the tentacles of the octopus.

A wonderfully artistic piece.
