Ancient Coins - Huge Pristine Megalodon Tooth
zoom view

A huge, perfectly preserved Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon) shark tooth, dating to 25 – 2 million years before the present day.

It's hard to comprehend that this enormous serrated tooth once belonged to a living creature. Yet this beautiful fossil would have lined the mouth of a particularly large Megalodon; one of Earth's most terrifying predators. An ancestor of the Great white shark, Megalodon swam the planet's prehistoric oceans, preying on large whales.

Palaeontologists believe that Megalodon may have been up to 60 feet long and could weigh around 80 tonnes. Its bite is thought to have been the most powerful of any living creature, capable of biting clean through the head of a whale.

Height: 7 inches on stand.

Length: 5.40 inches diagonally.

Unrestored.

Found by scuba divers, approximately 4 miles off the coast off Wilmington, North Carolina, in waters infested with tiger, great white and hammer head sharks.
