This piece was minted circa 89 BC under the authority of the
moneyer L.Titurius L.f.Sabinus. The obverse type depicts the head
of Taitus facing right, with the legend SABIN behind. The reverse
features two Roman soldiers, each bearing a woman in his arms,
with legend L.TITVRI. in the exergue. This gens traced its
descent from the Sabines, and perhaps from king Taitus himself,
which accounts for the use of the head of Taitus on all of the
types of this moneyer. The reverse type is a reference to the
rape of the Sabines by the Romans.
