| Description |
GALLIENUS AR silver antoninianus. Struck at
Mediolanum, circa 258 AD. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust
right. Reverse - LEG IIXX VI P VI F, Capricorn right. RIC V 362J, RCV
10273. 22mm, 3.0g. Rare. An old inked inventory number, likely from a European museum provenance, above the capricorn (6263).
RIC notes that the 18th Legion was
destroyed with Quinctilius Varus in the Teutoberg disaster, and
permanently retired afterwards. It must be that the legend IIXX is the
moneyer's blunder for XXII, the capricorn being the badge of Legio XXII
Primigenia. |
