Description

AE22 8.51g. 22mm.

Radiate head r.

M OP [DIADVMEN]IAN CAE

Draped bust of Serapis r., wearing modius.

CO[L AEL] KAP COM[M P F]

RPC V.3 online 1638 var. (reverse legend); cf. Meshorer 107

Rare. Dark green-brown patina with some tan fill.

Some mild roughness and reddish adhesions.

An interesting example with an obverse die very similar to those used at Caesarea Maritima; we could find no other examples of this bust style from Aelia Capitolina. The reverse legend is also unusual: instead of the typical CAP, it appears to read KAP, with the A upside down. We could find no other examples.

Hadrian founded Aelia Capitolina on the ruins of Jerusalem, dedicating the new city to Jupiter.
