A SUPERB specimen of the type. These coins are scyphate in shape.
I have developed a classification of these coins based on the design of the "flower" punch. Each punch has 6 "petals" radiating from the central circle. Four of the petal "stems" go right to the center of the central circle, but two of the stems always stop short at the circle's circumference. I arrange these two petals to be at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. I then look at the location of the single pellet that is always on the coins, always placing it to the right or below the center. The pellet can be located at 2, 4, or 6 o'clock. (If I had flipped the coin, the pellet could have been at 8, 10, or 12 o'clock.) This coin features the pellet at 6 o'clock ... hence I call it Type 6. |
