Description

SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AE sestertius. Rome mint, struck 196-197 AD. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse - VOTA PVBLICA, Septimius standing left, holding patera over lighted tripod, and facing Caracalla standing right, holding rod. RIC IV 730c; Banti 177. Very rare, only one example on acsearch & CNG archives. 29mm, 16.2g. An interesting dynastic type, struck shortly after Severus turned on his erstwhile ally Clodius Albinus and turned his rule into a new Imperial dynasty.
