Description

ROMAN REPUBLIC (Anonymous) AE 'full weight' quadrans. Struck 211-206 BC, Rome. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion-skin headdress; three dots behind. Reverse - Prow right; star before, three dots below. RCV 1037. 24mm, 11.4g.

The original weight standard for the as, according to the monetary reforms of 211 BC, was 44 grams. Thus, the lowly quadrans started out as a fairly heavy 11 gram coin.
