AUGUSTUS & AGRIPPA AE dupondius. Nemausus Mint, Gaul, struck after 10 AD. Heads of Agrippa, wearing rostral wreath, and Augustus, wearing laurel wreath, back to back, IMP DIVI F. Reverse - COL NEM, Crocodile chained to palm branch. RCV 1731. Scarce. Countermark ref Martini, Locarno 10. 25mm, heavy 14.9g.
Interestingly, the captive crocodile is still used on the coat of arms of Nimes (formerly Nemausus).
An interesting and scarce countermark. The letters D D (decreto decurionum, 'by order of the town council') are found many Spanish and Gallic provincials, and likely re-validate the coin, as during Claudian times the civic coins were being replaced by standard imperial denominations |
